Make your phone easier to see and hear
If the text is too small or the sound too quiet, you don’t have to squint or strain — a few settings fix it. Here’s how to make the phone comfortable for your eyes and ears.
Bigger text — iPhone
Section titled “Bigger text — iPhone”- Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size, and drag the slider right.
- Want it even bigger? Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text, turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes, and drag further.
- In the same place, Bold Text makes everything easier to read.
Bigger text — Android
Section titled “Bigger text — Android”- Settings → Display → Font size and style (drag to make it bigger).
- Display size in the same area makes everything — buttons and icons — larger, not just text.
- (Search “font size” in Settings if the menu looks different on your phone.)
A brighter, clearer screen
Section titled “A brighter, clearer screen”- Swipe into the Control Center / Quick Settings and drag the brightness slider up.
- Turning off Auto-Brightness (iPhone: Accessibility → Display & Text Size) keeps it from dimming on you.
Louder and clearer sound
Section titled “Louder and clearer sound”- Turn it up: press the volume buttons on the side while a video or call is playing.
- Ringer too quiet to hear? iPhone: Settings → Sounds & Haptics and raise the Ringtone slider. Android: Settings → Sound → Volume, raise Ring and Media.
- One ear better than the other? iPhone: Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual lets you balance left/right and turn on Mono Audio so you hear everything in both ears.
If it still isn’t comfortable
Section titled “If it still isn’t comfortable”- Changes didn’t stick? Some need you to leave Settings to take effect, or a quick restart (how to restart).
- Still too small or too quiet? Text Stephen — he can crank the accessibility settings up further with you.
