Sharing files with Syncthing
Syncthing keeps a folder automatically in sync between your device and the home server (and other family devices) — like a private Dropbox, except the files live on our own server, not a company’s cloud. Drop a file in the folder and it shows up everywhere it’s shared.
Install Syncthing
Section titled “Install Syncthing”- Computer (Windows / Mac): install Syncthing (Stephen can point you to the download), or a friendlier version like SyncTrayzor (Windows).
- Android: install a Syncthing app from the Play Store.
- iPhone / iPad: look for a Syncthing-compatible app — Stephen will recommend one, since Apple’s rules make this platform a little different.
Connect to the home server (once)
Section titled “Connect to the home server (once)”Syncthing pairs devices using a long Device ID (think of it as the device’s phone number). You only do this once:
- Open Syncthing — it shows your Device ID.
- Add the server using the Device ID (or scan the QR code) Stephen shares above, and approve the connection.
- When the shared folder invitation pops up, tap Accept and choose where to keep it on your device.
Using it
Section titled “Using it”- Put a file into the shared folder and it syncs to the server (and anyone else who shares it) automatically.
- Files others add show up in your folder the same way.
- “Up to Date” (a check mark) means everything is synced.
When it’s not working
Section titled “When it’s not working”- Both devices on and connected to the internet? Syncing pauses when one is off.
- Folder shows “Out of Sync”? Give it a few minutes — large files take time.
- Don’t see the shared folder? Make sure you Accepted the invitation (above).
- Still stuck? Text Stephen — pairing is the fiddly part, and he can walk you through the Device IDs.
